Communicate 2 – Discussions

Answer:What role or purpose do discussion forums serve in the online classroom and are they effective? How do discussion forums function as a teaching tool? How could they be used effectively and ineffectively? What are some best practices for facilitating forums online?

Discussion forums are important in the online classroom because students are able to express their ideas and be able to read and/or comment on classmates posts. This allows students to learn how to collaborate in an online community. Discussion forum are effective as students are able to take their time to create a composed answer and reply to classmates. Discussion forums could be ineffective if there is no monitoring and if students are not given discussion forum “rules and expectations” students will not know how to properly respond to each other. Best practices would be 1) teacher stays involved 2) require students to respond to at least 2-3 other students in thoughtful manner (give them rules and expectations)

Communicate 2 – News Items

Answer: As an online instructor, how do you plan to incorporate news items and announcements? What resources would you reference to format news items?

Artifact: Create an example of a News Item and share the example in your blog. If the News Item includes a video or interactive, please share the link or, better yet, use an embed code.

Communicate 2 – Homepages

Reflect: Consider the bulletin board examples in this lesson. Think about the variety of information shared in the bulletin board examples.  What information might you share as an online instructor through your classroom bulletin board?

There are a variety of things that could be placed on the bulletin, besides putting contact information and go to links, placing the upcoming assignments on the bulletin can help students keep track of the important things for that week.

Artifact: Create a sample Bulletin Board, which is student-centered, innovative, and adheres to the guidelines delineated in this lesson. Have fun and be creative! Once completed, take a screenshot of the bulletin board and post the screenshot in your blog.

Communicate 2 – Ongoing Communication

Creating a collaborative online community amongst stakeholders is an essential part of all virtual instruction programs and best practices.

Reflect:  Think about the examples provided throughout this lesson. Identify two highly effective methods of communicating with stakeholders. Create an artifact for each utilizing the resources outlined. 2 artifacts should be included in your blog. Ensure the products are creative, informative, and adheres to FERPA guidelines.

Artifact 1: My school Newsletter the principal puts out every Monday Morning! It is great.

Artifact 2: Email parents. In my district it is very easy to email parents as I can do it directly from my gradebook and all of the parent emails are imported for me automatically.

Answer: Why is ongoing communication in the online classroom important? How does the newsletter differ from mandatory communications?

Ongoing information is important because you do not get to see students or teachers face to face, this is the only way to make sure that EVERYONE knows what it going on. Newsletters are different as they can a serve as reminders, or as ‘”hey! look what we have done so far” Newsletters show the teacher is going out of their way to have authentic communication with stakeholders.

Communicate 1 – Communication Guidelines

Explore: Research effective communication guidelines within the online learning environment.

Create: Reflect on the needs for your individual Communication Plan. Then, construct a general outline that includes the following:

Next week, Monday May 1, I will be holding a live meeting session to help you get familiarized with the platform, online learning and course expectations.

Personal notes versus mass communication to stakeholders (appropriate times)  Personal notes will be on a individual basis using email or phone call. Mass communication can be sent in various forms, either through mass tex (Remind)m email or newsletter.

Stakeholders: All stakeholders will receive regular communication from me. Parents will be CC’d in student emails pertaining to grades and scores.

School Policies regarding Communication – School policy is to communicate with the instructor only to the school email provided to you. Social media or any another forms of communication are not allowed

Tools available for effective Communication – The tools that will be available to have effectice communication will be one or any of the following, email, Remind texts, phone calls, email blasts, newsletters

Provide the communication outline in your blog.

Communicate 1 – Identify

Explore: In the virtual classroom, instructors must offer continuous updates to all stakeholders, such as parents, students, and school facilitators. Think about each of the stakeholder descriptions.

Create: Using the information from this lesson, create a digital resource that highlights the various stakeholders in online learning. Are there other stakeholders within an online environment not considered in this lesson?

Successful Online Program

Communicate 1 – Communication Laws

Explore: Identify resources to utilize in communication with stakeholders that adheres to the laws of communication.

Answer: How can one refrain from violating FERPA and TCPA guidelines in online communication? What methods could be employed to verify that copyright is not being violated? Does copyright require that all work, images, words, and graphics must be original?

In order to refrain from violating FERPA, teachers should not give information about students such as their grades and private information typically on an educational record. In order to refrain from violating TCPA, teachers should refrain from using automated dialing equipment without the prior written permission of the recipients. In order to make sure that copyright is not being violated, students should be made aware of copyright laws and given sources where to find public domain photos, or how to reach out to the original author to ask for permission. Copyright can also go hand in hand with plagiarism and digital tools such can help a teacher verify the authenticity of student work.  “Fair Use Act” allows for parts of works, images, words and graphics to be used for educational and research purposes. Students/Teachers can use the “Transformativeness” essentially a user uses copyrighted material but a) adds value or b) re-purposes for a different use which allows for a new/different audience
